“There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread.” – Mahatma Gandhi
Higher Hopes is a 501 C 3 charitable foundation, which was established in 2014 with the objective to provide meals to 1,000 poverty-stricken households whose children are enrolled in the Early Head Start Child Care Partnership Programs (Early Head Start, Head Start and the Great Start Readiness Program).
Our plan this year, as in years past, with the help of corporations, foundations and individual contributors, will be to distribute 1,000 full Thanksgiving Dinner Kits to these underprivileged Head Start family households in the city of Detroit. Through Higher Hopes and foundation partners that include Project Healthy Community (www.projecthealthycommunity.org) & Gleaners Community Food Bank of SE Michigan (www.gcfb.org), each of the 1,000 kits will contain all of the necessary supplies to feed family and friends with a complete traditional Thanksgiving Dinner.
With the generous donations that we receive annually from our Fall fundraising efforts, we partner with Gleaners to provide complete meal kits in the summer months through their Summer Mobile Pantry program as well. Higher Hopes! provided healthy food products for distribution at 17 inner city sites in July and August 2016 and the goal is to provide these same healthy meal kits at 40 inner city sites in 2017! These are the months where families and children suffer the most from hunger because kids are not in school and there is less of a focus on helping at this time of the year. The food kits consist of protein like a 10 pound package of chicken, whole grains, fresh fruits & vegetables and canned goods. Each kit contains between 35-40 pounds of food, which provides enough food to make 15-20 meals.
In 2016 alone, through Thanksgiving, Higher Hopes! will have provided over 120,000 pounds of food, which equates to more than 60,000 complete meals! The goal for 2017 is to distribute at least 200,000 pounds of food between the Summer & Thanksgiving programs, which equates to over 100,000 healthy meals!!!
Generous donors are the key to our success and make it possible for Higher Hopes to provide these healthy meal kits during key times of the year! The families are overjoyed that they get to celebrate Thanksgiving in their own homes with their family and friends without having to worry about how they will pay for the food that they will cook and prepare on this great American holiday. Not to mention, the mobile pantries are extremely helpful in bridging the gap until the kids are back in school and receiving regular meals.
